🥎 07.09.26 The Heat, The Drama, The 14-14 Tie

Visions of birthday cake must have distracted me from grabbing the scoresheets, so this one’s from memory!

We were short on players, which meant a few folks stepped into unfamiliar positions — and they delivered. Our soon-to-be 89-year-old catcher, Carl, traded his gear for second base and reminded us all that age is just a number, making several key outs.
The game itself? Let’s just say it was spirited from start to finish — full of friendly debates, a few choice words, and plenty of “constructive feedback” flying around the field. Everyone had something to say, and nobody held back.
As the Florida heat pushed everyone to their limits, some wanted to call it early, but we played on. The visiting team rallied for 7 or 8 runs to pull ahead by two. The home team fought back hard, tying it up 14–14 before leaving the winning run stranded on third. There was no way we were playing one more inning to break the tie.
In the end, we probably should’ve listened to those who wanted to stop — the heat had us all seeing double! But hey, it wouldn’t be Lakeland softball without a little drama and a lot of heart.
Big shoutout to our home‑team hitters: Karl went 4‑for‑4, and Fred went 3‑for‑4 with two homers and a triple. And to the visiting team — apologies. I didn’t grab the scoresheets (birthday cake won), so I don’t remember who had the big hits, even though I know there were some solid at‑bats on our side too.  Way to battle back after we were down quite a few runs!
