Full disclosure: I wasn't at today's game, so this recap is brought to you courtesy of the scoresheet — and apparently, the scoresheet has a few stories to tell.
The visiting team came out swinging, with their first three batters crossing the plate in the opening inning while their defense kept the home team off the board.
In the second, Jack Wilcox and Bob Vandenberg crossed the plate, followed by a base hit from Greg that brought in another two runs for the visitors. The home team answered with hits from Jeff, Tom and Mark, scoring two runs.
The home team held strong in the third, leaving two visitors stranded. Then the home team bats took over, scoring five runs.
The visitors eked out another run in the fourth while holding the home team scoreless.
In the fifth, Gary and Rad crossed the plate for two more visitor runs, but the home team came out blasting. Dave hit a triple, followed by base hits from Luke, Ralph, Tony, Jeff and Tom, producing five more runs.
The visitors answered with four runs of their own, and heading into the final inning, we had a 12–12 tie.
The visitors couldn't put together enough hits to score, giving the home team one last shot.
Dave, already with two base hits, came through again with another hit. Luke followed by getting on base, and then Ralph drove Luke home with a base hit.
And according to the scoresheet... that's the winning run!
Final score: Home Team 13, Visitors 12!
Now, because I wasn't there, I'm going to blame the scoresheet for the next part.
Apparently, two more batters got up and made outs AFTER the winning run scored.
So either:
- We had a very dramatic ending with some bonus baseball,
- The scoresheet decided the game wasn't quite over yet, or
- I need someone who was actually there to explain what happened.
Regardless, a 12–12 tie going into the final inning and a walk-off run to win it 13–12 sounds like one heck of a game!
If you were there, feel free to fill in the blanks!
